DEXA Scans
DEXA examinations are used to provide a diagnosis of bone loss in patients. Bone disease causes bones to become thin and brittle, which increases a patient's risk for hip and spine fracture. Although bone loss is more common in women, it can also occur in men. Talk with your provider to discuss your risk factors associated with this disease. Our DEXA exams are interpreted by board certified physicians.
If your provider orders a DEXA exam:
- Please wear comfortable clothing without zippers or metal in the area below your waist (to avoid having to change into a gown).
- This test cannot be performed within 7 days of a patient having a barium study or a nuclear bone scan.
- Please do NOT take calcium supplements for 24 hours before your DEXA scan is performed.
- Please notify the technologist who performs your exam if you have been diagnosed with hypoparathyroidism.
